Our monthly magazine at the time, Standard Oil Bulletin, featured original illustrations created by California artists between 1913 and 1942. Three issues during the 1930s featured these striking illustrations of the bridge.
The first Standard Oil Bulletin cover illustration from 1933 is based on an architect's early rendering of the bridge prior to the start of construction. Note the color of the structure — the planners did not yet know that the Bridge would eventually be painted International Orange. The second, from 1935, shows steelworkers atop the south tower during construction. The third commemorates the opening day of the Bridge in 1937.
